His greatest films — “The Big Parade”, “Show People” and “The Crowd” were silents. He also directed the outstanding adventure drama, “Northwest Passage”; “Duel in the Sun”, an epic western; and a remarkable film adaptation of Tolstoy’s novel “War and Peace”.
